A pilgrimage tour to one of Armenia's most revered shrines. On the way we stop in Aparan at the Church of St. Khach, whose walls date back to the 5th century, and at the Armenian Alphabet Monument. From the village of Hartagyugh we climb Mount Srbi. After an hour and a half to two hours on foot we reach St. Hovhannes Chapel at about 2,150 m. According to tradition, relics of John the Baptist were brought here in the 13th century. In Soviet times the chapel was blown up three times, and each time the villagers rebuilt it. Today it is surrounded by hundreds of khachkars, brought by pilgrims whose wishes came true. The route is moderate, about 5.5 km. Bring comfortable shoes, a hat, sunglasses and sunscreen.
