A hike to the south summit of Aragats, Armenia's highest mountain. Aragats has four summits: the northern one, the country's highest point, rises to 4,090 m, while the southern one, at about 3,880 m, is the most visited. The climb starts from Lake Kari at about 3,200 m, next to a cosmic ray research station founded in 1943. The route is about 11 km there and back on a rocky trail with a steady ascent. From the top you look into the volcano's crater and over the surrounding valleys. Good fitness is required. Bring hiking boots and a spare pair of shoes, warm clothes, a raincoat, a hat and sunglasses, trekking poles, a flashlight, a first-aid kit, 2–3 litres of water and food for the whole day.
